Deep Creek Lake’s Four Seasons Resort

The Deep Creek Lake area, easily accessible via nearby I-68, offers a variety of outdoor recreational activities, including golf, water skiing, boating, swimming, rafting on world class whitewater, camping, excellent trout fishing, horseback riding, snowboarding, snowmobiling, alpine and cross-country skiing at Wisp Ski Resort near Deep Creek Lake, ice climbing and scenic plane rides, plus a wide variety of family entertainments, dining and shopping locations. Its 65-mile shoreline winds along the wide-open lake surface and into secluded coves.

Hoye Crest of Backbone Mountain boasts the highest point in Maryland with an elevation of 3,360 ft. This point, a favorite destination for hikers, was named after Captain Charles Edward Hoye, a renowned historian who preserved the area’s history and founded the Garrett County Historical Society.

Backbone Mountain, part of the Allegheny range, starts near Savage River and extends into West Virginia. It marks the Eastern Continental Divide, the point at which lands to the east drain into the Atlantic Ocean by means of the Potomac River, while those to the west drain into the Gulf of Mexico via the Youghiogheny River.

The Cranesville Subarctic Swamp was one of the first National Natural Landmarks designated by the National Park Service. It has been described as “a small piece of forest and bog that remained behind after the Ice Age.” Formed nearly 15,000 years ago, Cranesville Swamp is home to species of plants and animals usually found in northern areas of the United States and Canada. It is also the southernmost point where larch forests are found.

Broadford Lake Park is one of Oakland’s municipal parks. Canoes, sailboards, rowers and electric trolling crafts are invited to navigate the 140 acres of beautiful flat water.

At Bear Creek Fish Rearing Station visitors may view the process of raising fish from tiny fingerlings to prize-size catches.

Federal lakes in the area include Jennings Randolph Lake, a full recreation lake 5.5 miles long, and Youghiogheny River Lake, an unsurpassed setting for outdoor recreation, 16 miles long and covers 2,840 acres.

State lakes in the area, in addition to Deep Creek Lake – Maryland’s largest freshwater lake – are Herrington Manor Lake, New Germany Lake and Savage River Reservoir.
