Winter is here! Finally!

This weekend a big winter storm is supposed to move into our area, bringing some inches to several feet of snow to Garrett County! What are you waiting for? Jump in your car and come to see us. It’s going to be beautiful! You could rent a cozy cabin to retreat to after a fun-filled day of skiing, skating or hiking or even a sleigh ride. Did you know?????

After doing some research through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, I discovered some very interesting information. Did you know that Wisp was not the first ski resort in Maryland? That honor goes to New Germany State Park in the 1940’s they had both downhill skiing and cross-country nicknamed “Maryland’s Alps”. This was a premier destination until about the 1960’s. Today the downhill slopes have been reforested but people can still enjoy cross-country skiing. Most people associate Garrett County skiing . . .

Garrett County Ice Fishing Contest

It is that time of year again! The Garrett County Ice Fishing Contest has begun and will continue until March. Now that the lake has frozen over it’s time to get those reels back out and bundle up. All fish must be caught in Garrett County waters. A winner will be picked weekly and posted in the Republican. Contestants must have their fish weighed and measured at Deep Creek Outfitters, 32 Outfitter Way, McHenry, MD.

WEEKEND!

This weekend there are a lot of things you can do around Deep Creek Lake! There finally is enough snow on the ground to go cross country skiing, also the slopes at the Wisp should be in perfect condition for skiing and tubing now. Swallow Falls are definitely frozen by now – always a beautiful photo opportunity! On Saturday evening there will be Live Entertainment at the Black Bear, the Moonshadow Cafe and also at the HoniHoni. Another -very tempting- . . .

For Saturday, January 18, 2014, the weatherman has cold temperatures and snow for us – the Mountain State Brewing Company in McHenry, MD offers a cozier alternative: From 1 to 4pm Scott Alexander will perform at the Brewery. His music is described as “… nonrepetitive pop. His music is truly unique in the way it avoids verse-chorus repetitive structures, while employing catchy melodies and witty lyrics that evolve naturally through each song”. . . .

X-Country skiing in Garrett County, MD

Here is good news to all all-season outdoor enthusiasts: The area around Deep Creek Lake, MD is not only in summer a wonderful playground, but offers lots of outdoor activities in winter, too. For example, the Herrington Manor State Park offers 10miles of groomed trails. If this is not enough, there also is a 5.5 mile trail to connect Herrington Manor with Swallow Falls State Park. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and the quiet in the woods, then go back to . . .

Be careful!

Although the temperatures have been rising a little bit, please still be very careful when you have to be on the road. This rollercoaster weather will bring temperatures in the high thirties today, with a light drizzle that could freeze and make the roadways really slick. For tonight the weatherman called for a drop in temperatures, with some snow. The cold weather supposedly continues through the next couple of days. Take care!

There is a winterstorm warning out for Garrett County, MD from today until Thursday morning. The weathermen predict a bad wintry mix, with freezing rain and sleet and snow during the nights. Temperatures will be in the 30s, with nighttime lows around 16F. Although the County and SHA crews always do an incredible job, if you do not have to travel, better stay off the road. Things should get better during Thanksgiving Day, with even lower temperatures but no precipitation. . . .

Summer raced by and so did Fall. Like it or not, we will be in for wintery conditions this weekend. Snow is in the forecast for Garrett County, MD, along with cold temperatures. Time to get your snowthrower and the shovels ready and find your winter coats, hats and mitts.
