After doing some research through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, I discovered some very interesting information. Did you know that Wisp was not the first ski resort in Maryland? That honor goes to New Germany State Park in the 1940’s they had both downhill skiing and cross-country nicknamed “Maryland’s Alps”. This was a premier destination until about the 1960’s. Today the downhill slopes have been reforested but people can still enjoy cross-country skiing. Most people associate Garrett County skiing . . .
It is that time of year again! The Garrett County Ice Fishing Contest has begun and will continue until March. Now that the lake has frozen over it’s time to get those reels back out and bundle up. All fish must be caught in Garrett County waters. A winner will be picked weekly and posted in the Republican. Contestants must have their fish weighed and measured at Deep Creek Outfitters, 32 Outfitter Way, McHenry, MD.
The Garrett County State Parks offer their First Day Hikes on New Year’s Day. At Herrington Manor State Park, the hike starts at 1pm and you are invited to bring your (well-behaved, on a leash) dog with you. A a park ranger will guide this hike around Herrington Manor and will inform you about what you need to know when you bring your dog to a state park. At New Germany State Park the hike will start at approx. 1pm. . . .
