Winter is here! Finally!

This weekend a big winter storm is supposed to move into our area, bringing some inches to several feet of snow to Garrett County! What are you waiting for? Jump in your car and come to see us. It’s going to be beautiful! You could rent a cozy cabin to retreat to after a fun-filled day of skiing, skating or hiking or even a sleigh ride. Weather folklore (?)

With the weather being as the weather is these days, bad thoughts are surfacing. Was that really it? Summer’s over already? According to the meteorologists the weather will straighten itself out by the end of week. Warm temps will return and we can go back to boating, swimming, bicycling…. The weatherforecast for McHenry, Deep Creek Lake, is calling for daytime temps in the high 70s and NO RAIN for the weekend! Enjoy it (while it lasts), this winter might get . . .

Snowshoeing Anyone?

Deep Creek Lake offers yet another winter activity that many people probably aren’t aware of ……… snowshoeing tours. Yes, you heard me correctly snowshoeing! I never thought about it being an option here but why not? It is a great total body workout and lets you enjoy the outdoors in the winter months. Not everyone can ski or snowboard but I think almost everyone can snowshoe. I myself was introduced to it when visiting Quebec, Canada many years ago and . . .

Did you know?????

After doing some research through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, I discovered some very interesting information. Did you know that Wisp was not the first ski resort in Maryland? That honor goes to New Germany State Park in the 1940’s they had both downhill skiing and cross-country nicknamed “Maryland’s Alps”. This was a premier destination until about the 1960’s. Today the downhill slopes have been reforested but people can still enjoy cross-country skiing. Most people associate Garrett County skiing . . .

Garrett County Ice Fishing Contest

It is that time of year again! The Garrett County Ice Fishing Contest has begun and will continue until March. Now that the lake has frozen over it’s time to get those reels back out and bundle up. All fish must be caught in Garrett County waters. A winner will be picked weekly and posted in the Republican. Contestants must have their fish weighed and measured at Deep Creek Outfitters, 32 Outfitter Way, McHenry, MD.

It’s Fair Time!!!

It’s that time of year again for the Garrett County, MD Agriculture Fair! This is a great time for all family and friends to get out and enjoy the local vendors, crafters, and farmers of our County. This year marks the third annul Home & Garden Show at the Garrett County Fairgrounds. McHenry MD Highland Festival

2014 marks the 27th annual McHenry Highland Festival. This festival supplies the traditions of Highland music, games, and dance. You can visit the different Clan tents and shop with the Celtic vendors. This is a celebration for all ages to enjoy. The festival will be held this year in the dedication to the memory of long-time member for the Board of Directors Jerry Lee Humberson. April Showers Bring May Flowers!!

Spring is arriving in Garrett County. This May you can enjoy the Bird fest weekend at the Deep Creek Lake State Park Discovery Center. Beginning Saturday May 3rd at 6pm Katie Fallon will be speaking and signing her new book, and Sunday May 4th at 2pm there will be Bird Photography at the Aviary. Both days will host various children crafts, bird encounters, and walks. These activities will be taking place during different times of day. So come on out . . .
