Snowshoeing in Garrett County, MD

As winter still is in full swing and there is plenty of snow on the ground, make the most of it! A really nice alternative to skiing are the snowshoeing tours offered by All Earth Eco Tours at Swallow Falls State Park. Goosebumps and Grapes

On Friday, February 21, 2014, from 6 to 9pm, Goosebumps & Grapes will take place at the HoniHoni Bar at Deep Creek Lake, MD. The event features a bonfire as well as a wine sampling. The wines are courtesy of Republic National Distributing Company and will be sold at Arrowhead Market on Friday and Saturday. $3 from every bottle purchased will be donated to Special Olympics Maryland. DO THE DUNK!

It’s this time of the year again, the 2014 Deep Creek Dunk is coming up soon! The 16th Annual Dunk will take place on February 22, 2014. So far the weather seems to be cooperative – Deep Creek Lake will be very cold, if not frozen… All proceeds will benefit children and adults with intellectual disabilities participating with Special Olympics Maryland. So far they have raised approx. $65,000, this year’s goal is $170k – way to go, only ten days . . .

7th Annual Winterfest in Oakland, MD

Next weekend, Saturday, February 15 and Sunday, February 16, 2014 the 7th Annual Winter Fest will take place in d0wntown Oakland, MD. Enjoy a stroll through the Great Small Town, there will be so many things to see and do. For example, you can watch how ice sculptures are carved and admire the finished sculptures, there will be more than 36 on display!. Need some fresh air?

The Garrett County State Parks offer their First Day Hikes on New Year’s Day. At Herrington Manor State Park, the hike starts at 1pm and you are invited to bring your (well-behaved, on a leash) dog with you. A a park ranger will guide this hike around Herrington Manor and will inform you about what you need to know when you bring your dog to a state park. At New Germany State Park the hike will start at approx. 1pm. . . .

A break!

Don’t bother removing all the snow from your driveway yet…. Just in time for Christmas Winter will give us a break. From Friday on temperatures in the Mid-50s are expected for the Deep Creek Lake area. Seems like we will have to change plans for the weekend a little, from skiing to a walk or a run in the (green) woods. As there is also some rain in the forecast our cars will probably show their original color again soon, . . .

X-Country skiing in Garrett County, MD

Here is good news to all all-season outdoor enthusiasts: The area around Deep Creek Lake, MD is not only in summer a wonderful playground, but offers lots of outdoor activities in winter, too. For example, the Herrington Manor State Park offers 10miles of groomed trails. If this is not enough, there also is a 5.5 mile trail to connect Herrington Manor with Swallow Falls State Park. Christmas Treasure Hunt

From December 3 until December 24, 2013 you can go Treasure Hunting in beautifully decorated Downtown Oakland! Pick up your 12 Days to Christmas map from the Cornish Manor, the Cornish Cafe or the City Hall. Then take a nice stroll through downtown Oakland, MD and match the businesses to the ornaments they are displaying. Enter your results into the map and return it to the Cornish Cafe. Make it a Railroad Weekend!

If you like trains you have plenty of choices, even if the weather is not so nice. Why not go to Oakland, MD and visit the Railroad Museum at the old B&O train station? In November and December an exhibition of train photographs takes place, the museum is open Friday and Saturday from 10 to 3 and on Sunday from 12 to 3.
